For our second week we moved to south of Barmouth, an area we know well.
Saturday morning watched a heron catching grass snakes, killing them and
then swallowing them.
Afternoon to beach at Tonfanau, found a family
group of ringed plovers. The male noisily attracting our attention to take us away from the chicks.
Dunlin on the beach, along with redshank and turnstone. Gannets diving off-shore as they did all week, with large numbers of shearwaters passing through. Was told by other birders, but not seen by us, that sandwich tern, kittiwake and chough had been seen that afternoon.
Sunday came across a lesser whitethroats' nest by our parked car with both parents busy coming and going feeding young.
Surprised to see water buffalo
used to graze the undergrowth at the Dyfi Osprey Project.
Stonechats busy
feeding young and good to see the ospreys at and around the nesting
platform provided. Warmed up at Ynys-hir, found common lizards doing the same in the sun with large numbers of the commoner butterflies.
Large red and common blue damselflies.
Tuesday to Broadwater near Towyn, reed and sedge warblers heard and seen.
Watched three family
groups of well grown goosanders.
More golden-ringed dragonflies and the
green female beautiful demoiselle, pm to Tal y Llyn, quiet but nice to
find juvenile grey wagtails.Wednesday
morning and off to visit the ospreys and RSPB Ynys-hir again but
stopped at Aberdovey Dunes to have another look for sand lizards but no
luck. You have to walk over a links type golf course to reach the dunes
and a groundsman told me he sees them running all over. We found plenty
of their tracks but no lizards. When we were back at the car looked back
and watched maybe four dolphins pass by along with more shearwaters for
10 mins or more. Later watching the osprey and this time two intruding
ospreys flew over and the male flew up to join them and we watched all
three drift away. Lesser redpolls and siskins on the feeders there. At
RSPB Ynys-hir watched an osprey fly down the Dyfi estuary.Found the rare small red damselfly.
Areas of cotton grass in the boggy habitat
along with more singing sedge warblers.
Last day Friday a walk along
the beach at Tonfanau. Passed a keen fisherman. A mixed flock of 30 adult & juvenile oystercatchers.
Ringed plovers still present but no sign of chicks, passed the busy flocks of sand martins, their nest holes in layers of sand in the cliff face.
Gulls and gannets passing by.
On the return, two juv. wheatears were flying on and off the beach in front of us busy feeding. Home tomorrow. Stewart.
